Healing Tears

When was the last time you cried? How long have you been avoiding your tears? How long have you been choking back the words that you fear will unleash the flood behind your emotional walls? That is the story of Riley in Disney’s Inside Out. Her parents didn’t know how she was truly feeling about their move to San Francisco until she almost runs away from home and permits herself to experience sadness. She had to go through sadness to find joy. This journey resulted in a new more complex emotion depicted as a blue and yellow memory globe.

In essence, we rob ourselves of growing when we avoid unwanted feelings like sadness. Depression is a very real struggle for millions of Americans. In 2015, the National Institute for Mental Health estimated 16.1 million Americans over the age of 18 struggle with depression. However, the majority of those people just take a medication to treat their condition and ignore the therapy needed to resolve these complex emotions. This results in months or even years of stifled emotional growth. Therapy is a process to learn how to address scary, confusing emotions in a healthy way to benefit the whole person. Like Riley, how far do you have to run before you get off the bus and face your sadness? If you’d like to explore the possibility of therapy or need additional services, contact PBG to learn more.
